Yang Jiechi meets with Foreign Minister Nabeela Tunis of Sierra Leone

On June 25, 2019, Member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and Director of the Office of the Foreign Affairs Commission of the CPC Central Committee Yang Jiechi met with Foreign Minister Nabeela Tunis of Sierra Leone in Beijing.

Yang Jiechi said that China and Sierra Leone are old and good friends who share weal and woe. Last year, President Xi Jinping reached important consensus with President Julius Maada Bio on consolidating traditional friendship and enhancing cooperation in all fields. We need to well implement the consensus reached by the two heads of state and the follow-up actions of the Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC), cement exchanges at all levels, align the eight major initiatives for China-Africa cooperation with the Senegalese side's new direction plan, and strengthen cooperation within the framework of the FOCAC and the Belt and Road Initiative so as to bring more benefits to the two peoples in a rapid manner. China will continue to support Africa's security and development and work with African countries to uphold multilateralism and promote the development of the international order toward a more just and reasonable direction.

Nabeela Tunis expressed congratulations on the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China. Based on mutual trust, respect and support, bilateral friendship enjoys a time-honored history. China has greatly helped Sierra Leone in its infrastructure construction, medical and health care. When Sierra Leone was hit by the Ebola epidemic, China was the first to help and make indelible contributions to Sierra Leone. He thanked China for its support for Africa's cause of peace and development and its respect for African countries. Both Sierra Leone and China support multilateralism are stakeholders and share similar positions in multilateral affairs, and the two sides should continue to support each other.
