Wang Yi Speaks with President of the Libyan Presidency Council Mohammad Younes Menfi on the Phone at Request

On September 24, 2021, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi had a phone conversation with President of the Libyan Presidency Council Mohammad Younes Menfi at the latter's request during the General Debate of the UN General Assembly.

Wang Yi said, the Chinese and Libyan people enjoy traditional friendship. China firmly supports Libya in safeguarding state sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity, supports the Libyan Presidency Council and the Libyan Government of National Unity in safeguarding national stability and rebuilding the economy, and advancing the electoral and political process according to its established plan. China appreciates Libya's firm adherence to its friendly policy towards China and its valuable support on issues concerning China's core interests and major concerns. China is ready to stand firmly with Libya, jointly uphold the basic norm of non-interference in international relations, and safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of China and Libya as well as the common interests of developing countries.

Wang Yi said, the political process in Libya is now at a critical stage. Peace has been hard-won. He hopes all Libyan parties can overcome disruptions and difficulties, unswervingly advance the political settlement process. All countries should earnestly implement the "Libyan-owned and Libyan-led" principle, respect the choice of the Libyan people and accommodate Libya's legitimate concerns and appeals. The UN should continue to play its role as the main channel of mediation, fully listen to the voices of all factions in Libya and that of neighboring countries. All countries should further strengthen cooperation and intelligence exchange on counter-terrorism, strictly prevent the cross-border movement of terrorists and prevent the resurgence of extremist and terrorist forces in Libya.

Menfi said, Libya and China have enjoyed friendly relations for a long time. China is a true partner and friend of Libya. He thanks China for always supporting the choice of the Libyan people and providing valuable support to the formation of a government that enjoys national unity in Libya.
