On October 13, 2021, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi had a phone conversation with Chilean Foreign Minister Andres Allamand.
Wang Yi said, Chile was the first South American country to establish diplomatic ties with the People's Republic of China, one of the first countries to publicly support the restoration of China's lawful seat in the United Nations and an important cooperative partner of China in Latin America. China-Chile relations have long been at the forefront of China-CELAC relations. The joint efforts of the two countries in fighting COVID-19 have added new connotations to the traditional China-Chile friendship. Despite the impact of the pandemic, the two sides have boosted bilateral trade and made steady progress in pragmatic cooperation. The two sides should continue to firmly support each other on issues concerning each other's core interests, deepen cooperation on vaccine research, development and use, and promote the building of a global community of health for all. The two sides should continue to advance high-quality Belt and Road cooperation and promote cooperation in economy, trade, investment, mining, clean energy, science and technology, astronomy, people-to-people exchanges and other fields.
Wang Yi said, as developing countries, China and Chile should strengthen strategic coordination on multilateral affairs, jointly safeguard the international system with the United Nations at its core and the international order based on international law, practice true multilateralism and safeguard international fairness and justice. China has formally applied to join the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) and China stands ready to stay in communication with Chile on this.
Allamand said, Chile-China relations have created many "firsts". Chile is glad to give China just support at the important historical moment when the People's Republic of China restored its lawful seat in the United Nations. He thanked China for providing strong support for Chile's rapid vaccination. Chile has always been a staunch comprehensive strategic partner of China, unswervingly adheres to the one-China policy and looks forward to enhancing cooperation with China in the pandemic response, economy and trade. Chile supports multilateralism, agrees with China's major global initiatives, firmly supports China's joining in the CPTPP and supports China in hosting the Beijing 2022 Olympic Winter Games.
The two sides exchanged in-depth views on China-CELAC relations, saying that China-CELAC Forum has become an important platform for mutual respect, equal cooperation and mutual benefit. The two sides agreed to work together for the success of the third Ministerial Meeting of the China-CELAC Forum.
