Speech of Mr. Macky Sall
President of the Republic of Senegal
at the International Forum on the 50th Anniversary of the Discovery of Artemisinin and on Building a Global Community of Health for All
April 25th, 2022
Your Excellencies, Ladies and Gentlemen, Ministers and delegates to the Conference,
It gives me great pleasure to attend the International Forum on the 50th Anniversary of the Discovery of Artemisinin and on Building a Global Community of Health for All.
Let me extend warm welcome and congratulations to my friend, President Xi Jinping, on this excellent initiative.
This forum coincides with World Malaria Day, which reminds us that despite the progress made in malaria screening and treatment, this ancient epidemic still remains a problem that cannot be ignored today.
I would like to pay high tribute to Nobel laureate, Dr. Tu Youyou, who discovered artemisinin in 1972.
Her efforts have been recognized by WHO and have contributed greatly to the fight against malaria worldwide, including Senegal.
In fact, based on the close bilateral relations between China and Senegal, and under the framework of the FOCAC, where health is the main initiative, China has been helping Senegal to fight against malaria for more than a decade in numerous ways, such as: Supporting the development of the antimalarial planning strategy of Senegal, donating to the construction of the molecular biology laboratory, and providing antimalarial drugs.
Thanks to the support of partners like China, Senegal has made significant progress in fighting against malaria, and we will strive to achieve the goal of eradicating malaria by 2030.
I wish the forum a complete success.
Thank you (Xie Xie).
