China, Latin American and Caribbean countries discuss COVID-19 response via videoconference

On March 24, China and Latin American and Caribbean (LAC) countries held a videoconference on their respective COVID-19 responses. It was attended by close to 200 government officials and health experts from all of the 24 LAC countries, including Antigua and Barbuda, Argentina, and Brazil, that have diplomatic ties with China, as well as Nicaragua, which has not yet established diplomatic relations with China, was also represented.

Also online at the conference were representatives from the Pan American Health Organization and the Inter-American Development Bank, and country representatives from the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF in that region.

China introduced its current pandemic prevention situation and outlined its most comprehensive, thorough and strictest measures. With the arduous work done by the people, China’s situation of pandemic prevention and control continues to improve, and the resumption of production and normal life is speeding up.

Base on the concept of a community with a shared future for mankind, China strengthens communication with the WHO and relevant countries, actively carries out international cooperation and jointly safeguards world public health security with an open, transparent and responsible attitude.

As good neighbors separated by oceans, China is grateful for the help and support provided by the Latin American and Caribbean countries during its difficult times in fighting the COVID-19. The pandemic is currently spreading in the Latin American and Caribbean regions. China attaches great importance to the pandemic prevention in these countries and willing to provide assistance within its ability to secure victory in the battle against the COVID-19.

Experts from Chinese Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Peking University First Hospital, and other institutions introduced China's experience and practices in prevention and control, clinical treatment, and customs border inspection, and answered nearly 130 questions of all kinds in detail.

The foreign representatives praised the achievement and the contribution made by China in pandemic prevention and to global public health security. The videoconference organized by China was efficient, professional and targeted in guiding the pandemic prevention and control in these countries, which hope to strengthen cooperation with China and jointly win the battle against the pandemic.

The videoconference was co-sponsored by the Department of Latin American and Caribbean Affairs of China's Foreign Ministry, the Department of International Cooperation of the National Health Commission of China, the Department of International Affairs of the Civil Aviation Administration of China, the Department of International Cooperation of General Administration of Customs of China, the Foreign Affairs Office of the People’s Government of Beijing Municipality and Chinese embassies in relevant countries.
