Chinese medical team arrives in Djibouti to help fight COVID-19

The Chinese medical experts had just finished their two weeks’ mission in Ethiopia when they arrived in Djibouti on April 30 to help the country fight the virus.

Chinese Ambassador to Djibouti Zhuo Ruisheng, Djiboutian Secretary of State for Youth and Sports Hassan Mohamed Kamil, Secretary-General of Ministry of Health Saleh Banoita Tourab and officials from leading groups of pandemic prevention and control welcomed the medical experts at the airport.

The 12-members’ team, organized by West China Hospital of Sichuan University, Sichuan Center for Disease Control and Prevention, Sichuan Provincial People’s Hospital, the Affiliated Hospital of Southwest Medical University and the Affiliated Hospital of Chengdu University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, was one of the first medical teams dispatched by the Chinese government to African countries.  

The experts specialize in epidemiology, infectious diseases, respiratory care, intensive care, surgery, laboratory testing, and western and traditional Chinese medicine.

Zeng Yong, head of the team from West China Hospital of Sichuan University, said that the experts will carry out deep exchanges with their Djiboutian counterparts from the ministry of health and anti-pandemic leading groups, investigate quarantine, testing and treatment at medical institutions and share experience with all concerned.

The team will provide anti-pandemic guidance, training and technical consulting to help Djibouti better carry out pandemic prevention and control, added Zeng.

In addition, the medical team will also provide health guidance to personnel of Chinese-funded enterprises and overseas Chinese in Djibouti.
