Wang Xiaotao, chairman of the China International Development Cooperation Agency (CIDCA), met with David Beasley, executive director of the World Food Programme (WFP), via video link on Sept 10, 2020.
They exchanged views on enhancing bilateral cooperation.
Wang said that China appreciated the WFP for providing valuable support and help at the country’s critical moment in fighting COVID-19. China and the WFP have a good momentum in cooperating under the South-South Cooperation Assistance Fund and have already achieved fruitful results.
Wang outlined China’s anti-virus assistance to other countries and stressed that the country will actively implement the measures it has announced on supporting international cooperation in the fight against the pandemic and enhance cooperation with international organizations including the WFP.
China will continue to support other developing countries as they contain the virus, jointly build a community of health for mankind, and promote the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, added Wang.
Beasley said that since the outbreak of COVID-19 China has actively carried out international cooperation and provided various forms of anti-pandemic assistance including food aid to affected countries, especially in Africa. The WFP thinks highly of China’s concrete actions, and hopes to further strengthen exchanges and deepen cooperation with the CIDCA so as to share China’s successful experience in poverty reduction and development with other countries and contribute to global sustainable development.
After the meeting, Wang and Beasley signed agreements via video ink on providing food assistance to Ethiopia and Guinea on behalf of the Chinese government and the WFP. The projects aim to help the two countries cope with food shortages caused by COVID-19 and the recent locust plague.
