Zhang Maoyu, vice-chairman of the China International Development Cooperation Agency (CIDCA), held a videoconference with Charlotte Petri Gornitzka, deputy executive director of the United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF), on Sept 21, 2020.

They exchanged views on bilateral cooperation.

Zhang said that China has maintained good cooperation with UNICEF and made positive contributions to protecting and promoting the rights of women and children globally. China will work hard to implement the major measures it has announced about supporting the global fight against COVID-19 and strengthen cooperation with international organizations including UNICEF in the fight against COVID-19 and economic and social development in the post-pandemic era.

China will support the vulnerable groups in other developing countries in coping with survival and development challenges and promote the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the building of a community of health for all, added Zhang.

Gornitzka said that since the outbreak of COVID-19 China has actively carried out international cooperation and provided support to women and children in other developing countries. UNICEF highly appreciates China’s actions, welcomes the global anti-pandemic measures put forward by China and is willing to apply the organization’s advantages in participating in relevant projects. UNICEF hopes to further strengthen exchanges and deepen cooperation with the CIDCA to contribute to the promotion of global sustainable development.

After the meeting, on behalf of the Chinese government and UNICEF, Zhang and Gornitzka signed two agreements on assistance via video link. One is about providing humanitarian assistance to children affected by the COVID-19 pandemic and the locust plague in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and South Sudan. The other is about offering aid in basic medical care and nutrition services to women and children affected by the COVID-19 pandemic in Cameroon, Ghana, Liberia and Senegal.

The projects aim to help women and children in affected countries cope with the sanitation and health challenges caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and the locust plague.
