Luo Zhaohui, chairman of the China International Development Cooperation Agency, met with Siyabonga Cyprian Cwele, South African ambassador to China, on April 12.

Luo said that China and South Africa enjoy a profound traditional friendship and that their comprehensive strategic partnership has been developing in depth under the joint guidance of the two heads of state.

Since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, China and South Africa have worked together to overcome difficulties and achieved remarkable results.

Both China and South Africa are major developing countries. Their relations have gone beyond the bilateral scope and played an important role in guiding China-Africa relations and global development, said Luo.

He said that China is willing to strengthen coordination with South Africa in BRICS, G20, the United Nations and other multilateral platforms, implement the outcomes of the Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) and make China-South Africa relations a model of South-South cooperation and China-Africa cooperation. China will help African countries overcome the pandemic and recover their economic and social development.

Siyabonga Cyprian Cwele congratulated Luo on assuming his new post. He thanked China for its long-term valuable support to South African economic and social development especially the selfless assistance given amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

He said that South Africa attaches great importance to friendly cooperative relations with China, and is willing to work with China to fight against the pandemic and to strengthen pragmatic cooperation and realize common development.

The two sides exchanged in-depth views on development cooperation and other specific issues.
