The Republic of Senegal, a west African country located in Sahel region, has a semi-arid climate and extraordinarily lacks water. Underdeveloped water infrastructure in its rural areas even left local people suffering from drinking water shortage for years.

In 2019, the Chinese government-assisted rural well-drilling and water supply project in Senegal was successfully completed, providing drinking water facilities for more than 2 million rural residents in 12 of the country's 14 regions, greatly improving the quality of drinking water, sanitary conditions and living standards in the regions.

Aminata Dioupe, 29, a mother of three, is a villager from the Matam region of Senegal. Before the project was completed, she had to walk nearly 6 kilometers back and forth to a water pond every week to collect water, which was inconvenient and unsanitary. The village well-drilling project built a complete set of water supply facilities for her village, including wells, water towers and water diversion facilities, allowing her and her children to enjoy clean and convenient drinking water right at their doorstep.
