The China-built Chone Hospital in Ecuador officially went into operation on May 19, 2021.
Local residents were excited about finally having their own modern hospital, as it would reinforce their confidence in beating the COVID-19 pandemic. Local employees were also proud of contributing to the fight against the pandemic.
The original Chone Hospital was severely damaged by an earthquake on April 16, 2016. Upon the request of the Ecuadorian government, the Chinese government decided to help them build a comprehensive hospital on the original site which would cover medical care, scientific research and prevention.
The project started construction in July 2018 and suffered severe challenges from the COVID-19 outbreak. The Chinese construction team overcame difficulties and worked on both pandemic prevention and control and resumption of work and production, and eventually completed the project. The hospital symbolizes the deep friendship between the two countries and their joint efforts in the fight against the pandemic.
