A China-aided national emergency operations center was officially put into use at a ceremony held in Lima, capital of Peru, on July 18, 2019.
The newly-commissioned Peruvian National Emergency Operations Center has become one of the largest and most advanced emergency institutes for disaster prevention in Latin America.
During the past few years, the Peruvian government has held multiple drills to test the center's preparedness and capabilities in responding to natural disasters, such as storms and earthquakes, and issue early warnings to the public against any potential disasters.
Since the COVID-19 pandemic broke out in early 2020, the center has been a key venue where Martín Alberto Vizcarra Cornejo, then president of Peru, held video conferences with other senior officials of the Peruvian government, and the heads of all regional governments across the country on how to better contain the spread of the virus.
Because of its state-of-the-art equipment, many foreign health delegations have visited and attended technical training sessions at the center.
The national emergency operations center represents the wisdom and strength of the two countries and their people, and has written a new chapter in China-Peru relations. Moreover, it is expected to play an important role in helping Peru and its neighboring countries further enhance their ability to predict and handle natural disasters in the future.
