Thanks to a China-aided digital television terrestrial multimedia broadcasting (DTMB) demonstration project, nearly 190,000 people in Dili of Timor-Leste and surrounding regions, especially residents in mountainous areas, now have reliable access to high-definition digital TV programs at home.

There were only 13 TV signal transmission towers in Timor-Leste, and many far-off regions of the country were not covered by any TV signal because transmission facilities were located in large cities and could only transmit analogue signals before China extended its assistance in 2019.

At the invitation of its government, China decided to help the southeast Asian country build a DTMB demonstration project in March 2019. The Chinese side worked hard to implement the project amid the raging COVID-19 pandemic before it was completed in July 2021.

The project has made 22 Chinese TV programs available to more than 30,000 households in the country, making their lives more enjoyable.

Xiao Jianguo, Chinese ambassador to Timor-Leste, together with Francisco Martins da Costa Pereira Jerónimo, East Timorese minister of Parliamentary Affairs and Social Communication, recently conducted an inspection tour in a rural area of Liquica to learn about the implementation of the project.

Many people said that it was their first time to watch digital TV programs, expressing sincere gratitude and giving high praise to the Chinese government for its valuable assistance.
