The China-aided Wanica General Hospital was handed over to the Surinamese government at a ceremony on Feb 7, 2020.

In a speech at the handover ceremony, then vice Surinamese president expressed thanks to the Chinese government for its assistance, emphasizing that the hospital is a precious gift to Suriname from China and a symbol of pragmatic cooperation and friendship between the two countries.

Wanica General Hospital became the only designated hospital for the treatment of COVID-19 patients in Suriname after the country reported its first confirmed case on March 13, 2020.

Christina, 46, regained her health after 13 days of ICU treatment at the hospital. "Thanks to the advanced equipment and intensive care of medical workers at the China-aided hospital, I eventually recovered from the novel coronavirus. It is the Chinese assistance that has saved my life," she said in an interview.

Since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, Suriname has donated medical masks and gloves to China, and China has delivered medical supplies and COVID-19 vaccines to Suriname.

Meanwhile, China is planning to send a medical team to Suriname to help it contain the spread of the contagious virus, and a traditional Chinese medicine clinic will be set up in Wanica General Hospital to serve local patients.

The mutual assistance in the fight against COVID-19 has further consolidated and upgraded the relations and friendship between the two countries.
