A China-aided rural poverty alleviation project has fundamentally improved access of the impoverished people in a mountainous area of Luang Prabang, a province in northern Laos, to electricity, water, and public health resources over the past few years.
The project, which is an integral part of China's assistance to Laos, included the building of water and electricity facilities, improvement of transport and medical conditions, and installation of digital TV sets for poverty-stricken families in rural Laos in a drive to further strengthen relations between the two countries.
Speaking with Chinese technical assistance workers upon their arrival, Kaide, village chief of Vangbong in Viengkham, said local residents had dreamed of having a stable supply of water and electricity for several decades.
Kaide expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Chinese government for helping them realize this dream beyond their expectation.
"With the electricity supply, we can recharge our mobile phones and contact the outside to promote our agricultural produce at any time. Meanwhile, with clean water supply, we will be healthier and live a better life," he added.
The project has benefited many rural people in the village of Pakchim in another county in Luang Praban at the same time.
Xiang Horm, village head of Pakchim, said that he used to be extremely worried if someone in his family fell sick because there was no clinic in the village.
Now that China has helped build a clinic there, this is no longer a problem for him.
Speaking in an interview, Xiang Horm showed great thanks to China for its concrete and tangible assistance to his country and people.
Moreover, the news that the Chinese government will help all local families install satellite-connected TV sets has spread widely. Now children there often get together to imagine what it will be like to watch their favorite cartoons at home.
