Samoa hosted the 16th Pacific Games in 2019, which is the most important large-scale regional sporting event in Pacific Island countries.

China urgently provided comprehensive assistance in infrastructure, technology and materials at the request of Samoa, making a significant contribution to the success of the games.

The China-aided stadiums and aquatic sport centers served as the main venues for the  athletics, tennis, badminton, table tennis, basketball, volleyball, netball and water sports events during the games.

The opening and closing ceremonies of the games were held at the Apia Park Stadium, which was built with China aid in the 20th century.

The both sides completed the construction of new projects for the games with high quality in just under nine months, despite various difficulties such as shortage of construction materials, storms and mosquitoes.

From January to July 2019, Samoa sent the backbone of its sports and group gymnastic teams to China for training, and China also sent coaches to Samoa. A choreography team was even sent to Samoa to assist in scripting for the opening and closing ceremonies as well as performance training.

Samoa held a spectacular Pacific Games thanks to assistance from China, which is of milestone significance for the friendly relationship between the two countries.
