On February 7, 2022, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi had a phone conversation with Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian.
Abdollahian extended congratulations on the splendid opening ceremony of the Olympic Winter Games Beijing 2022, and expressed his belief that the Games would be a success. He also extended Spring Festival greetings to the Chinese people, and stressed that Iran is willing to have closer exchanges with China in all aspects to further deepen Iran-China comprehensive strategic partnership.
Wang Yi said, recently President Ebrahim Raisi sent a letter to President Xi Jinping congratulating China on hosting the Olympic Winter Games Beijing 2022, and you yourself also supported China on social media in Chinese. We appreciate and thank you for that. I wish Iranian athletes good performance in the Games. China will continue to deepen mutually beneficial cooperation between the two countries in various fields, strengthen communication and coordination in international and regional affairs, and keep adding new dimensions to the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries.
Abdollahian briefed Wang Yi on the latest progress in the negotiations on resuming compliance with the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), saying that Iran is firmly committed to reaching an agreement through negotiations while effectively safeguarding its national interests. Any agreement should be reached through consultation and negotiation rather than be imposed unilaterally on others. The final text should be the result of joint consultation. Wang Yi said, China appreciates Iran's principled position of solving the issue through negotiation, and supports Iran in raising reasonable demands during the talks. On the whole, the negotiations are taking positive steps towards the final settlement of the issue, and China believes that Iran's legitimate rights and interests will receive full attention from all parties. China is willing to work with relevant parties to continue to make constructive efforts to resume compliance with the JCPOA at an early date.
The two sides also exchanged views on the Afghan issue.
