The reconstruction of Durbar High School in Kathmandu, one of the China Aid reconstruction projects in Nepal after the 2015 earthquake, completed in August 2020. Established in 1853, the school marked the beginning of modern education in the country.

According to Cheng Congyin, project manager at the overseas branch of Shanghai Construction Group Co Limited, the construction team experienced a heart-wrenching moment during an on-site check when they saw students were taking classes in a partially collapsed building. In less than a week, the company built a temporary shelter for routine teaching activities.

The team spared no efforts to restore the original design and facade of the school, using the same terrazzo building materials and reproducing the same patterns, according to Cheng.

The efforts were greatly appreciated by the school administration and the Nepalese government. Now Durbar High School has become a landmark building in Kathmandu, which reflects the deep friendship between the two countries and the two peoples.
