On March 8, 2022, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi had a phone conversation with Pakistani Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi at the latter's request.
Wang Yi strongly condemned the recent serious terrorist attack in the city of Peshawar in Pakistan, and once again expressed sincere condolences to Pakistan, saying that China firmly supports Pakistan's efforts to fight terrorism and safeguard national security and stability.
Wang Yi said, during Prime Minister Imran Khan's visit to China and attendance at the opening ceremony of the Olympic Winter Games Beijing 2022 in February, leaders of the two countries had in-depth communication on overall and strategic issues, drawing up a blueprint and defining the direction for the future of bilateral relations. China looks forward to working with Pakistan to implement the consensus between the leaders of the two countries, deepen strategic mutual trust and cooperation, and jointly cope with global and regional changes.
Qureshi congratulated China on successfully hosting the Olympic Winter Games Beijing 2022 despite the impact of the pandemic, saying that Pakistan-China friendship is the cornerstone of Pakistan's foreign policy and a guarantee of regional peace and stability. Pakistan is ready to work with China to implement the consensus reached by the leaders of the two countries, further deepen cooperation between Pakistan and China, and safeguard the common interests of developing countries.
The two sides exchanged views on the situation in Ukraine. Wang Yi expounded on China's principled position. Qureshi said, Pakistan calls on Russia and Ukraine to resolve their disputes through dialogue and diplomatic means as soon as possible and strive to avoid further escalation of the situation.
The two sides also exchanged views on the Afghan issue and agreed to strengthen communication and coordination, leverage the unique strengths and roles of neighboring countries, and make positive contributions to peace and reconstruction in Afghanistan.
