Nikki Darroux is a building damage assessor in the Commonwealth of Dominica. She works for the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Barbados and East Caribbean area.
Hurricane Maria wrecked Nikki's house roof when it was ripping through her country. She and her two daughters had to take shelter in the washroom in the pouring rain for three hours.
It was very dangerous for her in such a situation, as she was pregnant at that time. So she had to crawl over the road with her two daughters to a neighbor's house, but its roof was also blown to pieces by the hurricane. Everyone was soaked to the bone.
The hurricane left Dominica in ruins.
Under the framework of the South-South Cooperation Assistance Fund, the Chinese government and the UNDP worked together to carry out a post-disaster assistance project in Dominica. Nikki's house was among a total of 472 houses and three schools that were rebuilt with the assistance.
