On May 18, 2022, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Committee and Director of the Office of the Central Commission for Foreign Affairs Yang Jiechi had a phone conversation with U.S. National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan at the latter's request.
Yang Jiechi said, the two sides should earnestly implement the important consensus reached by President Xi Jinping and President Joe Biden on China-U.S. relations. Recently, the two sides have held some dialogues in fields such as the two militaries, climate change, health and agriculture, which are beneficial, and the momentum of dialogue should be maintained. Meanwhile, it must be pointed out that for some time, the United States has been acting with a series of erroneous words and deeds that interfere in China's internal affairs and harm China's interests. China firmly opposes this and has responded forcefully. The United States should match its words with actions, translate its commitments into concrete policies and actions, work with the Chinese side in the same direction, properly manage differences, and do more constructive things to bring bilateral relations back to the right track of sound and steady development.
Yang Jiechi stressed, the Taiwan question is the most important and sensitive core issue in China-U.S. relations. The U.S. side has made it clear on many occasions that it pursues the one-China principle and does not support "Taiwan independence". However, recent U.S. actions on the Taiwan question are widely distant from its statements. If the U.S. side persists in playing the "Taiwan card" and goes further down the wrong path, it will surely put the situation in serious jeopardy. We urge the U.S. side to get a clear understanding of the situation, strictly honor its commitments and abide by the one-China principle and stipulations in the three China-U.S. joint communiqués. The Chinese side will take firm actions to safeguard its sovereignty and security interests. We live up to our words.
Yang Jiechi pointed out, seeking peace, cooperation and development is the general trend in the Asia-Pacific region and the common aspiration of the people. When it comes to relations with neighboring countries, China always acts on the principle of amity, sincerity, mutual benefit, and inclusiveness, develops friendly relations, pursues mutual benefit and win-win outcomes, and shares weal and woe. Any act that undermines the fundamental and long-term interests of countries in the region out of selfish interests is short-lived and doomed to fail. Any attempt to create various sorts of small cliques and incite division and confrontation leads nowhere.
The two sides also exchanged views on Ukraine, the situation on the Korean Peninsula, and other international and regional issues.
