On May 20, 2022, President Xi Jinping exchanged congratulatory messages with Timor-Leste's President Jose Ramos-Horta to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the country's resumption of independence and the 20th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between the two countries.
Xi Jinping pointed out that Timor-Leste has shown great vitality by developing its economy and improving people's livelihood in the past two decades. China and Timor-Leste enjoy a long-lasting friendship. Since the establishment of diplomatic ties 20 years ago, the two countries have continued to deepen political mutual trust, made solid progress in practical cooperation and maintained closer people-to-people and cultural exchanges. Bilateral relations took on a momentum of sound and stable development. I attach great importance to developing China-Timor-Leste relations. I am ready to work with President Ramos-Horta to elevate our comprehensive partnership of good-neighbourly friendship, mutual trust and mutual benefit to a new level, so as to benefit our two countries and peoples.
Ramos-Horta said that Timor-Leste appreciates China's key role in promoting regional and world peace and stability and thanks China for its strong support for Timor-Leste's nation-building process. Timor-Leste will stand firmly with China and enhance the friendship and cooperation between the two sides.
On the same day, Premier Li Keqiang exchanged messages of congratulations with Timor-Leste's Prime Minister Taur Matan Ruak. Li Keqiang said that over the 20 years since the establishment of China-Timor-Leste diplomatic ties, the two countries have witnessed smooth development of bilateral relations and steady progress in the exchanges and cooperation in various fields. China attaches importance to developing friendly and cooperative relations with Timor-Leste and will continue to support Timor-Leste's development and construction, in order to deepen and consolidate bilateral relations.
Ruak said that Timor-Leste and China enjoy a brotherly and long-lasting friendship and productive cooperation. He looks forward to further reinforcing bilateral cooperation to cope with the challenges of post-pandemic recovery together.
