On May 20, 2022, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi elaborated on China's position and views on developing China-Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) relations in phone conversations with Uruguayan Foreign Minister Francisco Bustillo, Ecuadorian Foreign Minister Juan Carlos Holguin and Nicaraguan Foreign Minister Denis Moncada.
Wang Yi said that though far apart, China and the LAC countries share broad common interests and have always supported and helped each other. China-LAC cooperation is South-South cooperation featuring mutual benefit and win-win results. China attaches great importance to the unique influence of Uruguay, Ecuador and Nicaragua in regional affairs and appreciates the positive contributions made by the three countries to the development of China-LAC relations. China hopes to continue to deepen practical cooperation in various fields and push China-LAC relations to a new level.
Wang Yi said, we oppose some countries clinging to the Cold War mentality and attempting to split the international community through ideological confrontation. China cooperates with LAC on the basis of equality and mutual benefit. China has no geopolitical considerations. China-LAC cooperation does not seek to target or replace anyone, and should not be disturbed or influenced by any third party.
Wang Yi said, from the perspective of building a community with a shared future for mankind, President Xi Jinping put forward the Global Development Initiative and the Global Security Initiative, and offered Chinese proposals for global development and security, which have received a warm response from more than 100 countries, including those in the LAC region. Amid various global challenges in the post-COVID era, China and the LAC should jointly uphold the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and basic norms governing international relations, and earnestly safeguard each other's sovereignty, security and development interests. China is ready to strengthen coordination and cooperation with the LAC countries in international and multilateral affairs, jointly hold high the banner of multilateralism, promote international solidarity and cooperation, and inject more positive energy into the complex and volatile international situation.
