On June 24, 2022, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi delivered a video speech to the 24th General Assembly of the Latin American Faculty of Social Sciences (FLACSO).
Wang Yi said, China attaches great importance to cooperation with the FLACSO. Last year, the two sides jointly held the "Lectures on Contemporary China" series activities, which played a positive role in enhancing mutual understanding and trust between China and Latin American and Caribbean (LAC) countries and laid a good foundation for the development of China's relations with the FLACSO. Today, China officially became an observer country of the FLACSO. China is willing to take this opportunity to make closer exchanges and cooperation with the FLACSO, strengthen exchanges and mutual learning between China and LAC countries, and contribute more wisdom and strength to the sustainable development of China and LAC countries.
Wang Yi said, facing the major changes and a pandemic both unseen in a century, China and LAC countries have supported each other and tided over the difficulties together, bringing relations between China and LAC countries into a new era featuring equality, mutual benefit, innovation, openness and benefit to the people. Not long ago, the Chinese President put forward the Global Development Initiative and the Global Security Initiative, charting the course for safeguarding world peace and security and promoting sustainable development around the globe. China is ready to work with LAC countries to jointly safeguard peace and tranquility, boost economic recovery, improve people's well-being and build a China-LAC community with a shared future.
The FLACSO is a regional intergovernmental international organization initiated by UNESCO and one of the three major social science teaching and research institutions in Latin America. The conference, held in Ecuador, voted to admit China as an observer state.
