Tang Wenhong, vice-chairman of the China International Development Cooperation Agency (CIDCA), met with Kanni Wignaraja, assistant secretary-general of the United Nations, via video link on Oct 27.
Tang said that global sustainable development is suffering setbacks due to the impact of multiple factors. For the benefit of mankind in the global community, China proposed the Global Development Initiative (GDI), which aims to build a global community of development and adopts a development-first and people-centered approach, in a bid to accelerate the implementation of the UN's 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
It was specified in the report to the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China that China is prepared to invest more resources in global development cooperation, and is committed to narrowing the North-South gap and supporting and assisting other developing countries in accelerating development, according to Tang.
The CIDCA is prepared to strengthen cooperation with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in key areas proposed in the GDI, and contribute to assisting other developing countries to respond to global challenges and implementing the UN's 2030 Agenda, Tang said.
Wignaraja, also assistant administrator of the UNDP, congratulated Tang on his new post, and said that China has shown the world how a mega-sized country could simultaneously achieve high-speed economic growth and common prosperity of the people, whose experience has great referential significance to other developing countries. She said that the UNDP shares the same concepts with the CIDCA, and is willing to tap its advantages in global network to continue strengthening bilateral cooperation, and explore more cooperation projects in such areas as post-pandemic recovery, energy, climate, and the aid effectiveness assessment, to jointly achieve the UN's 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.
