On December 22, 2022, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Co-Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Asia Society John L. Thornton in Beijing.

Wang Yi said that to achieve stable and sustainable development of China-US relations, the US should first form a right perception of China, and uphold dialogue and win-win cooperation as the keynote of bilateral exchanges, not confrontation or zero-sum competition. Noting the important common understandings the two presidents reached on exploring and establishing the guiding principles of bilateral relations during their meeting in Bali, Wang said that China is willing and ready to find a right way for China and the US to get along with each other based on the three principles of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation. It is imperative that the US abandon its unreasonable acts of containment and suppression of China, earnestly put President Biden's positive remarks into action, and return to the more positive and practical China policy.

Wang Yi said that facing recurring regional hotspot issues and global challenges like climate change and food and energy crises, China and the United States, as two major countries, should carry out necessary cooperation, play a leading role, and assume the due responsibility of major countries, which is also the common expectation of the international community. Wang noted that China is open to dialogue with the United States at all levels, and welcomes Mr. Thornton and other people from the US business, strategic, and academic communities to China for more face-to-face exchanges, so as to enhance mutual understanding between the two countries.

Thornton said that the United States and China should become strategic partners that can cooperate with each other. He expressed readiness to continue to play his role in promoting economic and trade exchanges between the two sides, enhancing Americans' overall understanding of China, and promoting the steady development of US-China relations.
