Wang Yi Meets with UK Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs James Cleverly

On February 18, 2023 local time, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Director of the Office of the Central Commission for Foreign Affairs Wang Yi met at request with Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs of the UK James Cleverly on the margins of the 59th Munich Security Conference.

Wang Yi noted that there are no geopolitical conflicts between China and the UK, and the two economies are strongly complementary with great potential for cooperation. Both countries are permanent members of the UN Security Council, shouldering the common responsibility of safeguarding world peace and stability. The two sides should clear away interference, stick to the right direction and promote the sound development of bilateral relations. The UK need to view China's development in an objective and unbiased light. The modernization of a country with 1.4 billion  people is a great progress of human civilization, and a boon to the world rather than a threat. China has the best record on peace and security among major countries. Its development strengthens the global forces for peace.

Cleverly said that the UK hopes to strengthen mutually beneficial cooperation with China, appreciates China's success in lifting hundreds of millions of people out of poverty, and believes that China's sustainable economic growth is in the interests of all parties. China is an influential major country that plays a key role in world affairs, and the UK is willing to cooperate with China to respond to global challenges.
