GDSSCF provides food assistance to Burkina Faso

A handover ceremony for a food assistance project for the homeless in the Sahel region of Burkina Fasowas was held in Ouagadougou, capital of Burkina Faso, on March 3, 2023.

The project was funded by China's Global Development and South-South Cooperation Fund (GDSSCF) in cooperation with the United Nations' World Food Programme (WFP). Chinese Ambassador to Burkina Faso Lu Shan, the WFP's Representative in Burkina Faso Elvira Pruscini, and officials from the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and the Ministry of Agriculture of Burkina Faso attended the ceremony.

Noting that the project was the first to land in Burkina Faso under the Global Development Initiative framework, Lu said that the Chinese government worked closely with the WFP and the interim government of Burkina Faso to provide emergency humanitarian food assistance for 170,000 local refugees, to help relieve their food crisis. This is not only a vivid practice of building a community with a shared future for mankind in Burkina Faso, but also a demonstration of China's role as a major country and its support for improving people's livelihoods in Burkina Faso, he said.

The WFP's country representative and officials of Burkina Faso appreciated China's strong and consistent support for humanitarian causes in the country, and pledged to distribute the food to all refugees. This is a demonstration project of trilateral cooperation implemented in Burkina Fasa, and they look forward to deepening cooperation with China in the future, which will contribute to safeguarding the people's livelihoods and fighting against terrorism in the country.
