Du Wei, deputy director-general of the Department of International Cooperation of the China International Development Cooperation Agency (CIDCA), met with visiting Director of the Corporate Services Division of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Sonja Leighton-Kone on March 16, 2023.
Du introduced the CIDCA's preliminary results in implementing the Global Development Initiative (GDI) and pointed out that some of the key areas under the GDI framework, such as climate change and green development, are highly in sync with some of the UNEP's strategies and responsibilities. He said that the CIDCA is ready to cooperate with the UNEP in such areas as the Global Development and South-South Cooperation Fund and human resource development, in a bid to jointly implement the GDI and the United Nations' 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
Leighton-Kone said that the UNEP applauds China's achievements in the fields of environmental and international development cooperation, regards highly the GDI, and looks forward to synergizing it with the UNEP's mid-term strategy for 2022-25, which will bring more communication and pragmatic cooperation between the two agencies, and help other developing countries achieve the UN's 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
The two sides exchanged views on strengthening cooperation. The UNEP Representative for China Tu Ruihe also attended the meeting.
