CIDCA chairman meets with Bill Gates, co-chair of Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation

Luo Zhaohui, chairman of the China International Development Cooperation Agency (CIDCA), met with Bill Gates, co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, on June 16, 2023.

Noting that the present international environment is becoming more complex with elevated geopolitical conflicts that have resulted in the cooling of North-South cooperation and an enlarged development gap, Luo said that the China-proposed Global Development Initiative (GDI) injected new impetus to the realization of the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

He pointed out that there are broad prospects and great potential for cooperation between the CIDCA and the foundation. The CIDCA is ready to continue to explore trilateral cooperation with the foundation in healthcare including malaria prevention and polio eradication, and other areas such as poverty alleviation, agricultural development and climate change response in African and Asian countries by innovating financing cooperation models and taking pragmatic action, in a bid to achieve preliminary results and jointly contribute to the implementation of the GDI and the realization of the UN's 2030 Agenda, he said.

Gates lauded China's achievements in international development cooperation, and acknowledged that China has good experience in developing agriculture and healthcare. He said that the foundation shares the same goal and similar vision with the CIDCA in those key areas and is ready to strengthen policy dialogue and pragmatic cooperation to jointly contribute to the realization of the UN's 2030 Sustainable Development Goals in developing countries.

The CIDCA's Vice-Chairman Zhao Fengtao, Director-General of the Department of International Cooperation Xu Wei, head of the CIDCA's Global Development Promotion Center Tang Ying, and Gargee Ghosh, president of global policy and advocacy of the foundation, also attended the meeting.
