Li Qiang Holds Talks with Prime Minister of Barbados Mia Amor Mottley

On the afternoon of June 25, 2023, Premier Li Qiang of the State Council held talks with Prime Minister of Barbados Mia Amor Mottley, who is on an official visit to China, at the Great Hall of the People.

Li Qiang said Barbados is a good friend and partner of China in the Caribbean region. Under the new circumstances, China is ready to work with Barbados to further enhance strategic mutual trust, deepen bilateral cooperation in various fields, and build China-Barbados relations into a model of solidarity and win-win cooperation between developing countries. China is ready to advance high-quality Belt and Road cooperation with Barbados, support effort to further synergize Barbados' Economic Recovery and Transformation (BERT) programme with China's Global Development Initiative (GDI), and enhance bilateral exchanges and cooperation in such fields as economy, trade, people-to-people and cultural exchanges. China encourages its enterprises to invest and do business in Barbados, stands ready to import more competitive products from Barbados, and will continue to provide assistance within its capacity for Barbados' economic and social development. China welcomes Barbados' efforts to implement the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development through the China-Caribbean Development Center.

Li Qiang pointed out that China understands the situation and special concerns of Small Island Developing States (SIDS) in addressing climate change and other issues, and is ready to jointly seek solutions to financing difficulties, and support developing countries in accelerating energy transition and achieving sustainable development.

Mottley said Barbados attaches great importance to its relations with China, and both countries are committed to improving people's lives and promoting sustainable development. Barbados thanked China for sending medical teams to Barbados and providing strong support for its fight against the COVID-19. Barbados is ready to strengthen cooperation with China in such fields as agriculture, energy, infrastructure construction, poverty reduction, tourism, culture and education, and jointly tackle climate change and other global challenges. Barbados opposes "decoupling and severing supply chains", and supports efforts to uphold the multilateral trading system with the World Trade Organization at its core and maintain the stability of international industrial and supply chains.

After the talks, Li Qiang and Mottley jointly witnessed the signing of several bilateral cooperation documents on the implementation of the Global Development Initiative, blue economy, sub-national cooperation, medical and health care, and news media.

Before the talks, Li Qiang held a welcome ceremony for Mottley at the North Hall of the Great Hall of the People.
