On Nov 2, 2023, Zhao Fengtao, vice-chairman of the China International Development Cooperation Agency (CIDCA), met with Christopher Elias, president of the Global Development Division of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, with whom he exchanged views on strengthening cooperation.
Noting that the two sides have maintained friendly cooperative relations, Zhao said that the CIDCA is willing to work with the foundation on such areas as helping eradicate polio in Afghanistan and actively promoting malaria prevention and control in Gambia, in a bid to contribute to the global health undertaking. He raised his hope that the two sides will improve working plans, strengthen institutional support, and enrich financing tools so as to jointly promote the implementation of the Global Development Initiative and the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
Elias said that the foundation applauds China's contributions to international development cooperation. Affirming the alignment of visions and goals between the two sides, he said that the foundation is willing to continue to strengthen project cooperation, make joint efforts in the eradication of polio, and explore more practical projects in Africa, so as to promote global sustainable development.
Director of the Gates Foundation's China Office Zheng Zhijie, Director-General of the CIDCA's Department of International Cooperation Xu Wei, and Deputy Director-General of the CIDCA's First Department of Regional Affairs Li Junfeng also attended the meeting.
