From Dec 7 to 8, 2023, the Second China-Indian Ocean Region Forum on Development Cooperation, co-hosted by the China International Development Cooperation Agency (CIDCA) and the people's government of Southwest China's Yunnan province, was held in Kunming, capital of the province.
Xu Wei, director-general of the CIDCA's Department of International Cooperation, attended and addressed the sub-forum on cooperation in maritime disaster prevention and reduction.
Xu said that the forum is an important measure in implementing the China-proposed Global Development Initiative, with the aim of achieving the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and related initiatives, as well as deepening blue economy cooperation between China and countries in the Indian Ocean region. China is ready to strengthen blue economy cooperation with countries in the region, focus on maritime disaster prevention and reduction, build a new platform for maritime cooperation to share technologies and management experiences, and carry out more "small yet smart" people's livelihoods projects in this area in order to better benefit countries and their people in the region, he said. China is willing to increase its resource input for global development, firmly support countries in the region in accelerating development, and contribute to the realization of goals in the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-30) and the UN 2030 Agenda, he added.
This sub-forum was hosted by the Second Institute of Oceanography of China's Ministry of Natural Resources. Over 80 participants from 10 countries, including South Africa, Pakistan, Myanmar and Egypt, held in-depth exchanges on blue disaster prevention and reduction, marine disasters and response measures in Indian Ocean Rim countries, and reached positive consensus.
