On Jan 11, a handover ceremony of the China-aided school uniform fabric to Sri Lanka was jointly hosted by the Chinese embassy in Sri Lanka and the Education Ministry of Sri Lanka. Chinese Ambassador to Sri Lanka Qi Zhenhong, as well as Sri Lankan Minister of Education Susil Premajayantha, State Minister of Education Arvind Kumar, and Secretary to the Ministry of Education Wasantha Pereraas attended the ceremony.
Noting that children represent the future, and 3.5 million students in Sri Lanka will benefit from this fabric assistance, Premajayantha extended his appreciation to the Chinese government and people for lending a helping hand at a time when Sri Lanka is facing economic crisis.
Pereraas also thanked China for this emergency assistance and expressed hope to strengthen cooperation with China in education in the future.
Qi said that the Chinese government had once again extended a helping hand to Sri Lankan friends, which demonstrates the profound traditional friendship between the two countries. The first batch of school uniform fabric arrived in Colombo on Dec 30, 2023, and the remaining part will arrive within a month, he said.
He stressed that the China-Sri Lanka friendship dates back far, and that children are not only the future and hope of the two countries, but also the inheritors and promoters of the China-Sri Lanka friendship. China will continue to extend a helping hand within its capacity to help Sri Lanka tide over difficulties and return to the track of economic prosperity and development at an early date, he added.
