Luo Zhaohui, chairman of the China International Development Cooperation Agency (CIDCA), met with Winnie Byanyima, under-secretary-general of the United Nations and executive director of UNAIDS, in Beijing on July 13.
Byanyima was in China to attend the second high-level conference of the Forum on Global Action for Shared Development. The two sides exchanged views on strengthening exchanges and cooperation.
Luo said that health affects everyone and is an important area of China's foreign assistance and international development cooperation programs. The CIDCA shares broad cooperation prospects with UNAIDS, he noted, adding that he wishes to make the signing of the memorandum of understanding on supporting the Global Development Initiative (GDI) an opportunity to strengthen cooperation on projects of the Global Development and South-South Cooperation Fund, explore cooperation projects on human resources development and personnel training, further enhance cooperation levels, promote the implementation of the GDI and the realization of the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in an integrated manner, and jointly build a global community of health for all.
Byanyima congratulated China on the successful holding of the conference and said the country plays a leading role in global health. UNAIDS is ready to strengthen cooperation with the CIDCA in all respects, with Africa as the focus area and women, especially young women, as the priority population, she said. UNAIDS is willing to share China's experience with the world and jointly promote South-South cooperation, North-South cooperation and multilateral cooperation to help developing countries accelerate the realization of the Sustainable Development Goals, she added.
CIDCA's Vice-Chairman Zhao Fengtao and Acting Director-General of the Department of International Cooperation Li Ming, as well as UN Resident Coordinator in China Siddharth Chatterjee and Director of UNAIDS China Office Erasmus Morah, also attended the meeting.
