Global Development Goals: CIDCA and UNDP to host NEC conference in Beijing

CGTN| Updated: 2024-10-15

The China International Development Cooperation Agency (CIDCA) and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) have partnered to host the 2024 National Evaluation Capacities Conference in Beijing. This is the first time such an event is held in China. Our reporter Cen Ziyuan has the latest.

The National Evaluation Capacities Conference is being held in Beijing's Yanqing.

The gathering, co-led by the UNDP, aims at ensuring that organizations remain accountable, transparent and learn from its programme implementation provisions.

ACHIM STEINER, Administrator, UNDP: "The world is drifting apart. The world is increasingly destroying development rather than building development through conflict and wars."

The six-day event co-organized by the CIDCA and the UNDP opened in the Chinese capital.

ACHIM STEINER, Administrator, UNDP: "I think China has begun the development of its own guidelines for evaluations of projects that are being implemented as part of BRI and GDI (Global Development Initiative). Again, there are many opportunities for us to collaborate. Evaluation is a discipline and a profession, but it is also the best practice that is being advanced."

It's the first time such an event is held in China.

ACHIM STEINER, Administrator, UNDP: "Building governance capacity, institutional capacity, we hope that our collaboration with China and the CIDCA will actually enable us to help many countries rapidly develop systems that are both from China's point of view and our point of view central to success of future development."

Chinese officials say the conference represents a major step for China to participate in global governance and to fulfill the GDI proposed by Chinese President Xi Jinping and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

XIAO JIE, Vice-Chairman, Standing Committee of the National People's Congress: "It is necessary to adhere to true multilateralism, make full use of platforms and mechanisms such as the National Evaluation Capabilities Conference, and to actively support the United Nations in continuing to play a leading and coordinating role."

Despite ongoing geopolitical tensions around the world, the 500 participants from more than one hundred countries and regions are determined to make progress.

Panels and workshops will focus on evaluation cooperation and inclusivity evaluation systems.
