Luo Zhaohui, chairman of the China International Development Cooperation Agency (CIDCA), met with President of the International Fund of Agricultural Development (IFAD) Alvaro Lario in Beijing on Oct 17.
Luo gave a rundown on China's efforts in implementing the Global Development Initiative (GDI), especially in promoting global food security, during the meeting. He pointed out that IFAD is the first United Nations agency to sign a cooperation document with China on GDI implementation, and that the two sides have carried out fruitful cooperation within the framework of the document. The CIDCA is willing to strengthen project-based pragmatic cooperation with IFAD in such areas as poverty reduction and alleviation, agricultural development and the blue economy, formulate cooperation plans and roadmaps, elevate the partnership, and jointly advance the implementation of the GDI and the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, he said.
Lario said the GDI serves as an accelerator in the realization of the UN Sustainable Development Goals, and is highly regarded and fully supported by IFAD. He lauded the CIDCA's important role in promoting global development cooperation, especially South-South cooperation and tripartite cooperation, and said that the two sides share similar concepts, approaches and goals, regarding each other as an important strategic partner. IFAD is willing to further enhance exchanges and alignment with the CIDCA, expand areas and methods of cooperation, and jointly promote global poverty alleviation and agricultural development in a bid to help other developing countries achieve common development, he added.
Vice-Chairman of the CIDCA Zhao Fengtao, Director-General of the CIDCA's Department of International Cooperation Li Ming, head of the CIDCA's Global Development Promotion Center Tang Ying, as well as IFAD's Associate Vice-President Wu Guoqi and China Representative Nii Quaye-Kumah also attended the meeting.
