A ministerial-level workshop for foreign permanent missions to the United Nations (UN), hosted by the China International Development Cooperation Agency (CIDCA), opened in Xiamen, East China's Fujian province, on Dec 9. Zhao Fengtao, vice-chairman of the CIDCA, addressed the opening ceremony.
In his address, Zhao said that the China-proposed Global Development Initiative (GDI) has injected Chinese strength into improving global governance. As China taps into new quality productive forces to empower Chinese modernization, it also ignites a new engine for global development, Zhao noted. He pointed out that new-type industrialization and new quality productive forces, key topics of this workshop, not only contain the rich connotations and practical experience of Chinese modernization, but also fit in with the UN Sustainable Development Goals in terms of decent work for all, economic growth and industrial innovation. The workshop aims to share new opportunities arising from Chinese modernization and deepen the alignment of the GDI with the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, he added.
Noting that the Global South has become a key force for the transformation of the international order, he raised his hope that all participants of the workshop will work together to deepen policy alignment, expand cooperation paths, practice multilateralism, promote the improvement of global governance, make the voice of the Global South heard, and demonstrate the Global South’s commitment to their respective responsibilities.
Permanent Representative of Cuba to the UN Ernesto Soberón Guzmán delivered a speech as the representative of workshop participants, while deputy head of the CIDCA-affiliated Global Development Promotion Center Lei Pili delivered a lecture on the GDI.
This workshop is the first training program designed by the CIDCA for foreign permanent missions to the UN under the GDI framework. It aims to help participants fully understand the GDI, the connotations of new type industrialization and new quality productive forces, and China's practical achievements in this regard. High-level diplomats from the permanent missions of 29 countries to the UN participated in the event.
