On Feb 28, Vice-Chairman of the China International Development Cooperation Agency (CIDCA) Zhao Fengtao held a video meeting with Assistant Secretary-General of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Thomas Asare on strengthening cooperation in meteorology.
Zhao said that the China-proposed vision of a community with a shared future for mankind aims to bring happiness to the people, progress to mankind and common interests to the world. As the leading agency for the United Nations Early Warnings for All initiative, the WMO is an important partner in promoting the building of a community with a shared future, Zhao said. The Chinese government has always supported the WMO in playing an important role in meteorological monitoring, disaster prevention and reduction, and addressing global challenges such as climate change. The CIDCA is willing to deepen all-round cooperation with the WMO, fully tap the WMO’s role in policy coordination, the professional capacity of the China Meteorological Administration (CMA) and the network advantages of relevant international organizations, strengthen brand development in meteorological and climate change fields, and use pragmatic projects to promote the Global Development Initiative (GDI) and the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, he concluded.
Asare spoke highly of the guiding role of the vision of a community with a shared future for mankind and the GDI in achieving the UN 2030 Sustainable Development Goals. He said the WMO is ready to expand and upgrade partnership with the CIDCA and the CMA, deepen financing and project cooperation and knowledge sharing, and jointly strengthen meteorological, hydrological and climate information services in developing countries, so as to help the world better respond to major challenges such as climate change and achieve green and sustainable development.
Director-General of the CMA's Department of International Cooperation Zeng Qin, Deputy Director-General of the CIDCA's Department of International Cooperation Meng Ran, and officials of the Permanent Mission of China to the UN Office at Geneva attended the meeting.
