A China-funded early warning system for climate disasters was launched in the Maldives on May 18.

The launch ceremony was attended by Chinese Ambassador to the Maldives Kong Xianhua, Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in the Maldives Enrico Gaveglia, and Maldivian Minister of Tourism and Environment Thoriq Ibrahim.

The project was funded by the China International Development Cooperation Agency under the framework of the Global Development and South-South Cooperation Fund (GDSSCF), and implemented by the UNDP with cooperation with the Maldivian Ministry of Tourism and Environment. It aims to enhance the Maldives' early warning capacity to respond to climate-induced disasters.

The project is a concrete measure taken by China to implement the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Global Development Initiative on addressing climate change and achieving green development. It is part of the "climate information early warning system" project jointly launched by the CIDCA and the UNDP, and also China's first tripartite cooperation project on climate change in the Maldives.
